Police are looking for a shooter after a round was fired in the vicinity of two officers in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Wednesday afternoon.
Gaithersburg police officers responded to a call about a vehicle blocking the driveway to the Spring Ridge Apartments in the 300 block of N. Summit Avenue about 3 p.m., police said.
The two officers suspected the driver was under the influence and began to investigate when someone fired a gunshot from a top floor balcony, Gaithersburg Police Chief Mark Sroka said. No one was struck.
Sroka said he canβt confirm the officers were targeted.
Police asked people in the 300 block of N. Summit Avenue to shelter in place while they searched for the shooter. That was lifted before 7 p.m. Police asked people to avoid the area.
An outer perimeter was set up before police entered the three-story apartment building to search for the shooter.
The minimum charge the shooter could face is reckless endangerment, Sroka said. βAnytime somebody shoots a firearm in a congested urban area, such as here in Gaithersburg, there is always a degree of danger to people,β he said.
Montgomery County police officers went to the scene and are searching for the shooter.
