Neighborhood Stunned By Eastern Market Assault

Investigators say there were eight hours between when an assault victim can last be accounted for before a beating in the Eastern Market area and when the victim was found unconscious on a porch.

More details have emerged about the young husband and father who was the victim of an assault that left him unconscious on an Eastern Market porch early Saturday morning.

Police discovered Thomas Maslin, 29, at around 8:30 a.m. Saturday on the porch of the house at 711 North Carolina Avenue, Southeast. He had been knocked unconscious.

Neighbors told News4's Derrick Ward that Maslin, who lives on Capitol Hill with his wife Abigail, had sought help after he was attacked, and had knocked on the door of both 711 North Carolina Avenue and its neighbor at 709 North Carolina Avenue. At the time, the people who live at both locations were out of town.

D.C. police have said that they are treating the incident as an aggravated assault, but have not released any information about possible suspects. They are investigating whether the assault was the result of a robbery.

In addition, authorities have not said when they believe Maslin was assaulted. The last time they know about his whereabouts prior to the assault was about 12:30 a.m. -- eight hours before he was found.

Maslin remains in an area hospital. Both police and his wife describe his condition as "extremely critical."
