The deadliest crash in Metro history was also one of the costliest for the transit agency. Metro lost about $25.5 million in the June 2009 accident, according to the Washington Examiner.
Four rail cars were destroyed for a total of $12 million, the Examiner reported. Other cars suffered $3 million worth of damage, but that’s only part of Metro’s total cost. It also spent $3 million running shuttles and also had to pay for cleanup and security around the crash site, the paper reported.
Metro is trying to get insurance to pay for $24 million of the damage, but it will still be on the hook for at least $1.5 million. It also has a $1 million deductible to pay.
Things could get even worse for Metro. This total doesn’t include legal fees from lawsuits filed against the agency in the wake of the accident.
