Officers were trying to arrest a Florida homicide suspect in a neighborhood in Laurel when the suspect opened fire, shooting an officer, police say. News4’s Shomari Stone reports.

A suspect wanted for a homicide in Florida is dead after shooting and wounding a Montgomery County police officer in Prince George's County, Maryland, police say.

The officer, Detective Donnie Oaks, remains hospitalized and in stable condition Wednesday after getting out of surgery Tuesday night, Montgomery County Police said.

Montgomery County officers were trying to arrest the suspect wanted for a homicide in Jacksonville, Florida, when the suspect shot an officer, Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones told News4.

The incident happened at the Crestleigh Apartments in the 9500 block of Muirkirk Road not far from Route 197 in Laurel, Prince George's County police said.

Jones said his officers were operating as part of a U.S. Marshals task force looking for Shawn Lequin Braddy, a suspect in a homicide in Clay County, Florida, that happened Monday, police said.

Officers found Braddy and attempted to arrest him about 3:30 p.m. when the suspect started shooting at them, police said. Officers returned fire and then the suspect shot Oaks, police said. Police then chased the suspect and he was shot and killed, Jones said.

It's unclear at this time who shot and killed Braddy.

"I'm on edge because I want to make sure that he is OK. Once I leave here, I'll be heading to a hospital to check on his condition. But I ask that the public keep him in your prayers because at this point and time this was an officer who was taking a very dangerous individual — these officers were taking a very dangerous individual — off of our streets," Jones said.

Prince George's County police are taking the lead in the investigation.

Oaks is a 20-year veteran of the Montgomery County Police Department.
