Metro riders at five stations could receive free rides from McDonald's in honor of the Metro's 40th anniversary.
McDonald's says it is giving away $10,000 in fares on Tuesday, The Washington Post reports. The company says it plans to give away 2,000 SmarTrip cards loaded with $5 apiece during the morning commute.
Bryan Cleghorn, president of the McDonald's Family Restaurants of Greater Washington, D.C., says the giveaway will help celebrate the start of the company's annual Monopoly game.
The giveaway lasts from 7 to 8:30 a.m. The Silver Spring Metro station will be the site of one of the giveaways; McDonald's and Metro declined to reveal the four other locations.
The Metro opened March 27, 1976.
Metro spokesman Dan Stessel says the promotion is entirely funded by McDonald's.
