A profane message left on the attorney general's public comment line has cost a Virginia man $250.
James Timothy Berry of Yorktown was fined that amount on Monday after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor curse and abuse.
Capitol Police Capt. Randy Howard tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that Berry left a message on the comment line's voicemail on Feb. 5 that was obscene and vulgar.
The message criticized Attorney General Mark R. Herring's support of same-sex marriage. It was left on the voicemail a day after Herring attended a hearing on a same-sex marriage case in federal court in Norfolk.
Howard says Berry initially was charged with threatening over the phone. The charge was later reduced in exchange for a guilty plea.
