Local Governments Sort Through IRS Guidance on 2018 Property Taxes

People lined up again in Montgomery County, Maryland, Thursday to prepay their 2018 property taxes, but the verdict is still out on whether those payments will be accepted. News4’s Chris Gordon reports the county says it is not allowed to refund the tax money it has collected but the county has delayed depositing any checks. D.C. is still allowing residents to prepay property taxes by visiting the D.C. Tax and Revenue website. Alexandria, Virginia, announced Thursday it will refund the prepayments it collected from residents and said it would take about six weeks to return the $6 million it collected from 650 residents. Fairfax County, Virginia, residents can request a refund if they prepayed their 2018 taxes by emailing refunds@fairfaxcounty.gov.
