A loaded gun was discovered in a Prince George’s County middle school on Friday, according to a letter sent home to parents.
The letter said the weapon was seized by Nicholas Orem Middle School security personnel and officers from the Hyattsville Police Department after an anonymous tip told them where to look. The student, who has not been identified, was taken into custody.
No students or staff were injured. It is not known why the student brought the weapon to school.
Principal Theresa Merrifield said in the letter that parents can help prevent situations like this from happening.
“We take the safety of our students and staff very seriously, but we also need your support and help to ensure that Nicholas Orem Middle School remains a safe learning environment,” Merrifield wrote. “You can assist us by checking your child’s belongings each morning to be sure no inappropriate items are brought to the school.”
The student faces disciplinary action from the school. There is no word on if any other charges will be filed.
