Joint Base Andrews lifted a lockdown at 6 p.m. after a report of a man with a gun near base housing Thursday afternoon.
A white man wearing a purple sweatshirt and black shorts and carrying an apparent AR-15-style rifle was reported about 2:30 p.m., JBA posted on Facebook.
No suspect has been found in a sweep of the base, but an increased security presence remains as housing is checked door-to-door.
No deaths or injuries have been reported, and no shots were fired, according to JBA.
Parents were released to pick up their children at 5 p.m., and people on the east side of the base were released at 5:30 p.m.
People were told to stay away from base housing and shelter in place during the lockdown.
