3-Year-Old Girl Killed, 4 Teens Injured in Shooting at Dumfries Home: Police

Suspect arrested, charged with murder

NBC Universal, Inc. News4 is learning more about the 3-year-old girl killed in a mass shooting Wednesday in Dumfries. Northern Virginia Bureau Reporter Drew Wilder reports.

A 3-year-old girl is dead, and four teenagers are seriously injured after a shooting at a home in Prince William County. A suspect — an intimate partner of one of the teens — is in custody, police said.

Police responded to the 17900 block of Milroy Drive in Dumfries before noon Wednesday, Prince William County police said. That’s within a townhome community off Richmond Highway.

Five people were found suffering from gunshot wounds, including a 17-year-old girl found outside the home, Deputy Chief Jarad Phelps said. The other victims were found inside.

One victim was pronounced dead on the scene. Phelps said that victim is a 3-year-old girl. The four others, ranging in age from 14 to 17, were taken to hospitals with life-threatening injuries, police said. A 14-year-old boy also was in the house during the shooting but was unharmed. All live in the house and were determined to be related as part of an extended family, police said.

“Tragic, absolutely tragic,” Phelps said. “There’s no sense for this young individual to have lost their life or anybody to be a victim of a gunshot over an argument.”

Police arrested 20-year-old Kenyatta Lee Oglesby of D.C. without incident nearby. They said he was in a relationship with a 17-year-old female victim.

Two firearms were recovered at the scene, police said. They haven't determined if they were used in the shooting.

Oglesby is charged with one count of murder, four counts of aggravated malicious wounding and five counts of using a firearm in commission of a felony. He is being held without bond.

Court documents reveal Oglesby had a record with law enforcement, including a warrant for failing to appear at a D.C. court in relation to gun charges. He’d also been arrested locally on weapons charges out of North Carolina, but those charges were dropped, court records say.

A neighbor’s security camera captured what appears to be the 17-year-old running through a grassy area minutes before the shooting. Then, screams and a barrage of gunshots are heard on the video.

“We call 911, pretty much, we came outside, and the girl was screaming, saying, ‘help me!’” the neighbor, Shahrooz Khan, said.

Khan said he rushed over to help the girl, and a police officer guided him on what to do.

“It was pretty bad. I mean, honestly, I was shaking,” Khan said. “You never thought or ever imagined in your life that something like this would have happened.”

A man who asked not to be identified also heard the 17-year-old girl screaming. He’s CPR certified and ran over to help.

Neighbor Sharon Garrett also ran to help as police filled the parking lot.

“It had me bawling for a minute,” she said. “I just couldn't fathom that. It was bad. It was bad to look at. There was blood everywhere."

She said the 17-year-old girl had been shot at least twice and while Garrett tried to comfort her, she told her who pulled the trigger.

“She said it was her boyfriend that did it," Garrett said.

"I heard a woman screaming," neighbor Alijah Skinner said.

Police believe the violence was isolated to the residence.

Several police vehicles were seen in a parking lot, and a building was blocked off by yellow police tape, Chopper4 footage shows. Members of law enforcement were seen at the front door of one home.

The public was asked to report any suspicious people, avoid the area and take directions from police.
