Human remains found encased in concrete in refrigerator behind DC building

Police were called to a building on Brooks Street NE after construction workers noticed a smell, police said

NBC Universal, Inc. Sources familiar with the investigation told News4 D.C. police found what appear to be human remains encased in concrete. News4’s Jackie Bensen spoke to neighbors in the area.

Apparent human remains were found encased in concrete in a refrigerator behind an apartment building in Northeast D.C. Friday morning, law enforcement sources tell News4.

Police were called to a home in the 4300 block of Brooks Street NE at about 11:45 a.m. after construction workers noticed a smell, according to preliminary reports.

Officers arrived and found the remains at the property. News4 video shows investigators at a multifamily building.

Investigators focused their attention on a large commercial dumpster. They later covered it with a blue tarp.

The remains were taken to the D.C. medical examiner's office where an official cause of death will be determined.

A death investigation is underway. No information was immediately released on any arrests or suspects.

The building currently is occupied by only a few people, according to those who live there.
