Short Break in Humidity; Heat Wave to Spike This Weekend

Temperature could reach 100 Sunday

Storm Team4 Meteorologist Tom Kierein has the forecast for July 19, 2016.

What to Know

  • Sunday could be the first day in four years for temperatures at National Airport to reach 100 degrees.
  • There is a chance of isolated thunderstorms south of D.C. in the afternoon, but storms will subside between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday will be "the day to be outside this week,” said Storm Team4 Meteorologist Chuck Bell

We are getting a break from the humidity after a round of scattered severe thunderstorms in Virginia Tuesday afternoon.

Storms capable of producing hail and 60 mph wind gusts prompted alerts in parts of Culpeper, Fauquier and Spotsylvania counties, but the storms have moved south of the area.

The humidity came down as did the temperature, setting up a day of nice weather Wednesday, but the heat wave is set to take a turn for the worse over the weekend.

Sunday could be the first day in four years when temperatures reach 100 degrees at National Airport, according to Storm Team4.

Temperatures were in the high 80s by early afternoon, with an "annoying" level of humidity, Bell said. But that humidity could drop with the storms.

"Tomorrow is going to be the day to be outside this week," Storm Team4 Meteorologist Chuck Bell said.

The humidity will likely be much lower, and high temperatures are expected to stay below 90 degrees. But you'll need to enjoy the break in heat while it lasts.

Temperatures are expected to return to the 90s Thursday, and it will only get hotter Friday, with highs in the mid-90s, Bell said.

Saturday temperatures may be near 100 degrees, and Sunday might reach 100 degrees. Heat indexes could surpass 105 degrees over the weekend, he said.

A chance of thunderstorms next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will follow Sunday's spike, Bell said. Temperature highs those days are also in the 90s, with Monday's high at 98 degrees.

D.C.'s 13 spray parks will have extended hours to combat the heat wave, staying open until 9 p.m., said NBC4's Susan Hogan. You can see a map of the District's spray parks and pools here.
