Man Fatally Shot in Northeast

Family said victim often got a ride home from work, but on Thursday night he took the Metro

News4’s Shomari Stone talks to the mother of Akinwole Williams, who was fatally shot late Thursday in Northeast D.C.

A 31-year-old man was shot and killed while walking home from the Metro late Thursday.

It happened around 11:40 p.m. in the 1000 block of 44th Street NE near I-295.

Akinwole Olu Williams was struck by a shotgun blast to the chest. He stumbled to the front door of his apartment, which is where police found him.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he died.

The victim's mother, sister and brother told News4 that Williams -- who went by the name Olu -- worked at Comfort One Shoes on Connecticut Avenue near Dupont Circle and often got a ride home from his brother, who worked at a shoe store across the street and shared an apartment with the victim, News4's Pat Collins reported. But on Thursday night, he was tired and didn't want to wait for a ride, so he took Metro, getting off at the Deanwood station.

Williams's family said they don't know who would try to harm him. He was found with his wallet and phone, authorities said.

Williams received his bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies from Catholic University in January. He was considering going to law school, his family said. He was not a graduate student at Catholic, as was previously reported.

“We mourn the loss of Akinwole and remember him as a beloved member of the Catholic University community,” President John Garvey said. “As a community of faith, let us find comfort in the love of our Lord and the knowledge that our faith supports us in difficult times such as these.”

He graduated from Woodrow Wilson Senior High School in 1999, and moved to D.C. from Takoma Park, Md., in 2000.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police.
