An FBI court filing says that email exchanges between Sue Marcum and her suspected killer showed the AU professor felt uncomfortable with the way he was handling her money before her death, the Post reported.
The FBI says this helps establish a motive for Jorge Landeros, who has been charged with Marcum's murder. From the Post:
“In recent electronic mail between Marcum and Landeros,” the affidavit says, “it was clear that Marcum, a university professor who may have had an intimate relationship with Landeros, was increasingly uncomfortable with the fashion in which Landeros was handling and spending the account funds.”
Marcum and Landeros were jointly involved in an investment fund, according to the FBI.
Also in the affidavit, the FBI alleges that DNA found on the murder weapon matches with that of Landeros. Police have not disclosed just what the murder weapon was, but said the cause of Marcum's death was asphyxiation and blunt-force trauma.
Landeros worked as a yoga instructor in the Washington D.C. area, and met Marcum in 2005. He has been charged with first-degree murder in her death, but has not been arrested because he is living in Mexico. Landeros has sent U.S. investigators taunting messages from Jaurez, his hometown, inviting them to brunch.
Before her death, Sue Marcum named Landeros sole beneficiary of a $500,000 life insurance policy.
