This month, passengers can apply for expedited screening at Reagan National Airport.
The Transportation Security is expanding its PreCheck program. It allows trusted passengers to be per-screened, saving them time in the security line. Some travel clubs including Delta and American Airlines have provisions that extend into TSA’s security program.
TSA administrator John Pistole announced another group that will now be included in its PreCheck program: qualified military personnel flying through Reagan National Airport. He made that announcement while speaking at the luncheon at the National Press Club in northwest Washington Monday.
Pistole’s speech addressed counterterrorism and the future of aviation security. He said security is no longer a one-size-fits-all approach since the September 11th attacks.
Pistole noted that TSA agents have screened nearly six billion passengers since 2002 and detected thousands of firearms. He told the audience agents find an average of three to four firearms daily at airports across the country.
Pistole said the progression of airline security, and technology enable agents to hone in on the passengers considered more of a risk. He said he'd like the TSA to be able to provide an expedited screening process to travelers considered "low risk."
TSA expects to expand its PreCheck program to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Dulles International Airport sometime this year.
