Eight D.C. public schools that were locked down during the investigation into a shooting at the Washington Navy Yard will reopen as usual Tuesday.
A lockdown at the schools -- and one administrative building -- was lifted before schools dismissed at their usual time Monday afternoon. Afterschool activities were cancelled at Eastern High School and Eliot-Hine Middle School, but all other afterschool and extended-day programs proceeded as usual.
During the lockdown, no visitors or staff were allowed to enter or leave the buildings, and recess for students was held inside.
These schools were affected:
- Amidon-Bowen Elementary School
- Brent Elementary School
- Eastern High School
- Eliot-Hine Middle School
- Jefferson Academy
- Tyler Elementary School
- Payne Elementary School
- Watkins Elementary School
- Van Ness Administrative Building
The following charter schools are also on lockdown:
- Eagle Academy PCS - New Jersey Ave.
- Friendship PCS Chamberlain Elementary and Middle.
- Cesar Chavez PCS for Public Policy - Capitol Hill
- Richard Wright PCS for Journalism and Media Arts
- Somerset Prep DC PCS
- Friendship Collegiate Academy
- Friendship Southeast Elementary Academy
- Friendship Tech Prep Academy
DCPS sent this letter home to parents, which includes lockdown procedures, talking to children after the Navy Yard shooting and talking to children after any shooting.

The 11th Street Bridge and roads in the area are closed.
Metro has also reopened New Jersey Avenue entrance at the Navy Yard station.
