Chain Bridge was closed in both directions Monday afternoon after a dump truck overturned, injuring the driver and spilling a load of cinder blocks onto the bridge.
The bridge was closed for the start of the evening rush hour but reopened about 5 p.m., authorities said.
"Severe traffic disruptions anticipated to continue into evening commute," a message from the Arlington Alert system said.
The dump truck overturned at about noon, near the Virginia side of the bridge. Photos show a load of rubble on the roadway. The truck's driver was trapped inside. A crew removed him and he was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Drivers were advised to avoid the bridge, which is one of six bridges that connect D.C. and Northern Virginia.
Monday already was a rough day for commuters. Metro trains on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines were delayed after one out-of-service train rear-ended another at about 1 a.m.
It wasn't immediately clear why the truck crashed.
