Dog Found 10 Days After Owner Was Killed in NC Car Crash

The pup was found with a broken leg, and was covered in bug bites

A dog who disappeared after her owner was killed in a car crash in North Carolina has been found after 10 days missing.

The Fayetteville Observer reports that Nellie, a pit bull who belonged to William F. Schlesinger of Arlington, Virginia, had a broken rear leg and was covered in bug bites when she was found about 2.5 miles from the crash site.

She is being treated at a veterinary clinic in Fayetteville.

A friend of Schlesinger had been searching for Nellie after the July 10 wreck. Workers at a convenience store said the dog wandered up to the store early Thursday.

It appears Schlesinger fell asleep as he was traveling north on I-95, crossed the southbound lanes and hit a tree, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.

He was 57. Additional information on Schlesinger was not available immediately.
