Deputy Seriously Injured by Gunfire During Chase in Calvert County

A suspect was also shot and has not life-threatening injuries

A deputy is in critical condition after being shot after a car chase Saturday evening in Calvert County, Maryland, authorities say.

The incident started at about 9:30 p.m. with an attempted traffic stop in the Yellow Bank Road area in Dunkirk. Deputies said they stopped the car, which then sped away, leading authorities on a chase down Route 4, according to a release from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.

The two suspects were driving at speeds above 100 mph while the driver was shooting at deputies, striking one patrol car. The chase ended in the Huntingtown neighborhood when deputies used a pit maneuver, according to the sheriff's office.

When the chase ended, the car’s passenger ran away and was immediately taken into custody. At the same time, the driver fired shots and ran into a nearby neighborhood. Deputies shot back and after a short foot chase, the suspect was arrested.

During the gunfire exchange, shots hit and seriously injured a deputy. The suspect was also injured in the gunfire.

Both the deputy and the suspect were taken to the hospital. The deputy is in critical condition. The suspect has not life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.

The injured deputy has been identified as Senior Deputy James Flynt. He has been a Calvert County deputy for five years and was previously a correctional deputy at the Calvert County Detention Center, according to the sheriff's office.

The suspect has been identified as Brandon Alexander Turner, 21, of Greenbelt, Maryland. The female passenger was not immediately identified.

Turner is being charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault in the first degree, attempted second-degree murder and assault second degree of a law enforcement officer, according to the sheriff's office.

People in the area during the incident said they heard gunshots that sounded like firecrackers. They said neighbors called to tell them to lock themselves in and be safe.

A video taken a few miles from where the chase ended shows authorities had much of the road blocked off following the incident.

Two additional deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave per policy. They have been identified as deputies T. Bowen and A. Aranda.
