DC Shadow Senator Pleads Guilty to DUI

WASHINGTON -- District of Columbia shadow Sen. Paul Strauss pleaded guilty to drunken driving following his arrest last year in Adams Morgan.

Strauss received probation and a $400 fine. He entered the plea Friday in D.C. Superior Court.

According to police, Strauss was stopped in October for speeding while traveling on the Duke Ellington Bridge. He had a blood-alcohol level of 0.16 percent, twice the city's legal limit.

Shadow senators are elected by D.C. residents, though the unpaid position doesn't come with any real power on Capitol Hill. Rather, Strauss acts as the city's lobbyist.
