D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray signed a new labor agreement for a soccer stadium for DC United.
Gray, DC United officials and officials from the affiliated national unions of the Washington DC Building and Construction Trades Council announced Tuesday a new project labor agreement for the construction of the $300 million stadium.
That agreement is intended to ensure that D.C. workers get first priority in employment and receive federal wage rates.
“Through this agreement, the District has secured the highest priority for bona fide District residents in employment, apprenticeship and training opportunities as well as the creation of contracting opportunities for local business,” Gray said. “This agreement advances those goals and ensures that District residents in the construction trades have improved pathways to life-long careers with good wages."
The agreement is similar to that used to build Nationals Park.
The city and the team have agreed to split the cost of the soccer-only stadium, which is tentatively scheduled to open in 2016 in an industrial section of southwest Washington known as Buzzard Point. D.C. United currently plays in RFK Stadium.
