Funk Travels From W. Va. to Baltimore

A rotten cabbage odor is wafting from west to east, and Maryland officials have taken note.

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency has been monitoring a chemical leak that happened in West Virginia.  An odd odor has been reported throughout Frederick, Prince George's, and Montgomery counties, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The leaked chemical is mercaptan, according to the Frederick News Post.  Mercaptan is a relatively benign chemical that is mixed with natural gas, which is odorless, in order to help detect natural gas leaks.

The gas is only dangerous at very high concentrations, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, but it does have a pungent smell.
