Drivers who park in D.C. shelled out about $61.5 million for tickets in the last fiscal year — but AAA data suggests drivers have gotten a bit savvier about avoiding tickets in the last decade.
About 1.4 million parking citations were issued in fiscal year 2018, AAA said in a report released Thursday. That's significantly lower than the 1.9 million tickets dolled out in 2011, which brought in more than $91 million.
But parking ticket revenue is up from 2017. One reason behind that may be steeper fines.
Pricier tickets are going out now for multi-space parking meters.
A lot of people forget to put that meter receipt in their windows and those tickets are $50 a pop — whereas old school expired meter tickets cost $30, AAA says.
Out of nearly 200 possible parking violations in the District, failing to display a receipt at a multi-space parking meter is the most common.
News4 mapped out the parking ticket hot spots throughout the city — park there if you dare.
