Crews Battle Massive Apartment Fire in Odenton, Md.

More than 10 apartments damaged; no one injured

Nearly 70 firefighters were needed to put out a massive blaze at an Odenton, Md., apartment complex Friday morning.

Intense flames and smoke were billowing from the Seven Oaks apartment building on Peaceful Way when Anne Arundel County firefighters arrived shortly after 10 a.m.

Chopper4 hovered over the scene, showing the charred and gutted units left behind by the fire. Footage also showed a chimney toppling and falling into the building.

Firefighters had to call in reinforcements from Baltimore, Howard County and nearby Fort Meade before the three-alarm blaze was extinguished.

Some residents were home at the time of the fire but were able to escape safely before firefighters arrived. Ten of the building's 30 units sustained damage, fire officials said. No one was injured.

About 20 families, including those of five service members stationed at Fort Meade, were displaced by an Odenton apartment building. Red Cross and the property management company were both on the scene to help displaced residents.

Division Chief Keith Swindle said the apartments were built in 1988, before sprinklers were required.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
