Chuck Brown Day in Washington

On what would have been Chuck Brown's 76th birthday, Mayor Vincent Gray declared Aug. 22 Chuck Brown Day in the District of Columbia.

The mayor also announced plans for a new memorial honoring the Godfather of Go-Go at Langdon Park in northeast Washington.

The mayor wants the part of the park bordered by 18th, 20th, Franklin and Hamlin streets to be renamed "Chuck Brown Memorial Park." There would be a permanent memorial to Brown built at the park. Other improvements to the park's amphitheater and facilities would also be made.

The mayor released a statement Wednesday saying, "Chuck Brown and his music truly epitomized what was best -- and what continues to be great -- about our nation's capital, and that's why it is important we make sure that generations now and in the future know of this great artist."

The D.C. Council would need to improve the plans for the memorial.
