Child Dies After Crash on Richmond Highway

NBC Universal, Inc.

A child was killed, and three adults hurt, after a head on crash on Route 1 in Fairfax County. Northern Virginia Reporter Drew Wilder has the details.

A crash claimed the life of a child Wednesday morning in Fairfax County, Virginia, county police said.

The two-car crash happened about 7 a.m. in the 5900 block of Richmond Highway (Route 1) near Huntington Avenue, police said.

The driver and passenger in a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria were traveling north on Richmond Highway when the driver lost control on an ice covered part of the road, police said. The car went into the southbound lanes and crashed into a 2015 Hyundai Elantra.

The woman and a child in the Elantra were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The child died, police said shortly after 8:30 a.m. A teenager in the Elantra and the driver of the Crown Victoria were hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening. Police previously said only three people total were sent to a hospital.

"Tragically the child has died at the hospital," said Greg Bedor of the Fairfax County Police Department.

The child's age has not been released. Police said they were still working on notifying the child's next of kin before releasing any more information about them.

Fairfax County Police say one of the adults is still in critical condition, and detectives are investigating exactly what happened.

One of the cars involved was crunched into a pile of mangled metal in the horrific crash. A close-up shot of the other vehicle involved was hardly recognizable as the front end of a car.

More than three hours after the crash, the two cars were hauled away and Route 1 traffic opened back up.

A fundraiser has been created for the family of the child who died.
