Brishell Jones, 16, was laid to rest Thursday.
Almost 1,000 mourners gathered at Canaan Baptist Church in Northwest. A white hearse brought the casket to the service. Her mother grieved openly and sadness filled the service for this promising teen so senselessly gunned down along with three others last week in a mass shooting in Southeast.
Brishell was sheltered. The Washington Post reports that her mother, Nardyne Jeffries, did everything she could to protect her daughter from the harsh realities of the neighborhood. She sent her to Catholic schools. She even home-schooled Brishell for the past year. But it was not enough to save her, to save them, from this day. The sun shined brightly, but not for those who grieved her loss.
The teen was on her way to culinary school in North Carolina in the fall. She was excited about becoming a chef.
It was the sad last service for the four young people killed in that drive-by shooting. On Tuesday and Wednesday, funeral services were held for Tavon Nelson, William Henry James III and Davaugh A. Boyd.
