Police say the man who died in a car fire on a Bowie golf course was trying to free the car from the mud.
A groundskeeper at the Enterprise Golf Course in Bowie called about the burning car around 5 a.m. Sunday.
Investigators say 70-year-old Frank Andrew Bartee of northeast Washington got stuck in a muddy area of the golf course. His car's engine caught fire as he worked to free it from the mud.
Bartee suffered severe burns and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fire melted the car's VIN number and license plate, making the vehicle difficult to identify.
Detectives are still trying to figure out why Bartee drove onto the course initially.
