A White House advisor was killed when his bicycle and a car collided in Maryland Saturday afternoon.
Jacob Thomas Brewer died while participating in the Ride of Conquer Cancer event in Howard County.
Police say Brewer, 34 of Alexandria, Virginia, was traveling westbound on Old Frederick Road when he entered a sharp curve and lost control. Brewer crossed into the eastbound lanes of the roadway where the driver of a 2008 Honda Pilot struck him.
Brewer was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda was not injured.
Brewer worked in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as a senior adviser to the U.S. Chief Technology Officer.
"Michelle and I are praying for all of Jake’s family and his many friends, most of all his wife, Mary Katharine Ham, their daughter, Georgia, and their growing family. They'll always have a family here at the White House," the statement from the president read.
Brewer's family has launched an education fund in his memory. So far, the GoFundMe page has raised $114,360.
