Bar Standoff Leads to Deadly Shootout

Police say suspect fired on officers

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. -- A man was shot dead by police early Tuesday morning after barricading himself inside a bar and opening fire on officers in the parking lot, according to Prince George's County police.

Someone called 911 just after midnight to report a man with an assault-style weapon walking northbound in the 3100 block of Branch Avenue.  Investigators said arriving police saw the man in front of Holiday Liquors, and when the suspect saw them he ducked inside the bar.

Police said there was a brief standoff, during which the gunman refused to allow customers to leave the bar.

About a half hour later, the suspect walked into the parking lot and fired on police, investigators said.  Officers returned fire and the suspect was shot and killed.

Police have not released the man's name.

Branch Avenue was closed in both directions at Naylor Road in Temple Hills, causing long delays for commuters.
