A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) early Monday morning near the border between Prince William and Stafford counties.
Dustin Eugene Schexnayder, 31, of King George, Va., was riding in the southbound lanes of Route 1 when he left the roadway and struck a guard rail, Prince William County Police said. His body, which was in the middle of the road, was then struck by a driver in a 2013 Honda Accord.
When police were called to Route 1 and Russell Road in Triangle, Va. about 1:30 a.m., they did not see Schexnayder 's 2007 Hyosung GT650. Police initially thought the victim had been walking. Schexnayder 's motorcycle was found in a nearby tree line once the sun came up.
The driver who struck Schexnayder, a 47-year-old Fredericksburg man, remained at the scene.
It's not known whether alcohol or speed played a factor in the crash. Police also do not know whether Schexnayder was wearing a helmet.
Route 1 was closed for several hours between Russell Road and Corporate Drive. The northbound lanes reopened at about 8:45 a.m. Southbound drivers are being detoured to Russell Road.
