A 2-year-old boy is safe Sunday night after his parents told police they thought he had been shot and wounded in Southeast D.C.
The toddler was injured in the 1100 block of K Street SE, just blocks east of the Marine Barracks and Barracks Row.
The child was rushed to a hospital, where his parents called police at 3:50 p.m. on Mother's Day. Police initially said the child was believed to have been shot and wounded. Upon further investigation, they found that he had not been shot.
The toddler is expected to be OK. Additional details on his injury were not released immediately.
Late Sunday afternoon, police and a K-9 searched an apartment complex's playground for evidence. Police are still investigating.
As summer approaches, D.C. police are set to target six high-crime areas. So far this year, 55 people have been killed, marking a 41 percent increase over the same period last year.
