One hundred dogs, cats and rabbits that were in animal shelters in the Houston area when Superstorm Harvey hit are now in Maryland and in need of foster homes.
Last Chance Animal Shelter in Waldorf, Maryland, took in the animals so that shelters in the Houston area would have room for pets displaced by devastating flooding.
“I started crying as soon as I walked through the door,” said Joann Gilbert, a College Park resident who is fostering one of the dogs.
After a few weeks, Gilbert will be able to decide whether she will keep her foster pup or allow her to be adopted by another loving family.
“This dog has no smile on her face [now]. But I am going to make her smile, because I am taking her home,” she said as she grinned at her new canine friend.
The Maryland shelter is giving the animals preventative flea and tick medications, dewormer, vaccinations and microchips, with the help of the shelter’s staff and volunteers.
After the animals get that medical care, they will need fur-ever homes.
