GMU Student Sentenced to 3 Years for Selling LSD to Frat Brother Who Jumped to His Death

A judge sentenced a George Mason University student to three years in prison for selling LSD to a fraternity brother who jumped to his death from a dormitory window days later.

Alejandro Porrata admitted selling LSD to sophomore Tristan Medina in September 2017.

Medina and a friend took the drugs three days later, the prosecution said.

Roomates testified Medina started getting wild and at one point turned to a friend to say "I love you" before running down the hall and jumping through a fifth-floor window on the Fairfax, Virginia, campus.

LSD was found in his system.

"You are a drug dealer," the judge told Porrata. "You did a very stupid thing, and as a result, your family is suffering, the Medina family is suffering, and you will suffer as well."

"Tristan would want us to forgive and forget, and that's going to be really, really hard," said his mother, Jill. "And you know you come in here thinking you're going to be satisfied, and you're not. You just hurt for the other person, too."

Porrata also was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and active probation.

Prosecutors declined to offer Porrata a deal when he pleaded guilty. He had faced up to 40 years in prison.

"My son's been gone for 10 months," said Tristan Medina's father, Bernhard. "Now, I'm finally getting some sort of closure. Unfortunately there's still questions out there that I need answers for."

Both Medina and Porrata were members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
