Cyclist Assaults Biker Trying to Pass on Loudoun County Trail

A beautiful Sunday afternoon bike ride turned into an unexpected assault for a cyclist in Loudoun County, Virginia.

A man was riding his bike on the Washington and Old Dominion Trail near Ashburn Village Boulevard about 2:15 p.m., when he tried to pass two bicyclists, the sheriff's office said.

He was riding on the center line of the trail when a cyclist coming from the opposite direction intentionally reached his arm out and hit his bike helmet, knocking him to the ground, according to the sheriff's office.

The man was seriously injured and is now stable at Inova Fairfax Hospital, the sheriff's office said.

The suspect rode off in the opposite direction heading east toward Ashburn Village Blvd. Deputies say his bike was described as being similar to a time trial bike or a triathlon bike.

The bars on the bike were "aero bars" and his helmet was an "aero" helmet covered with a sun shade, which covered half of his face. He was about 6 feet tall.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to call 703-777-1021.
