The fire is believed to have started on the top floor of a three-story vacant rowhouse before it extended to other buildings. D.C. Fire & EMS said six structures were affected by the fire or by secondary damage like smoke.Β At least four of them were three-story rowhomes.
A neighbor who has lived in the area for 27 years said there was another fire in a red building that happened this summer.
"They're owned by Shiloh Baptist Church [and] they're empty," he said. "The fact that firefighters are getting hurt trying to protect these properties over here, it's just a frustration for the neighbors."
Shiloh Baptist Church said they are "deeply grateful" for the quick response from police officers, firefighters, the Department of Buildings and other agencies that came out to help.
The church was not damaged from the fires.
The 1400-1600 blocks of 9th Street NW were closed between O and R streets, as was the intersection of 9th and N streets NW.
Video shows the front of the top level of one rowhouse completely blackened after the fire was put out.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
