A U.S. Park Police officer and a suspect were shot in Northwest D.C. Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

About 2:30 p.m., Park Police officers tried to stop a suspect wanted for a drug violation at 12th Street and Massachusetts Avenue, police said. They chased the suspect to 12th and M streets where the suspect pulled out a gun and exchanged fire with police.

The suspect was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

The officer was taken to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and is alert, police said.

“On scene, officers rendered aid to both the officer and the suspect,” Park Police Sgt. Thomas Twiname said. “The officer was then transported to the hospital where he’s receiving treatment for his injuries. The suspect was also transported to the hospital and was later pronounced deceased.”

Multiple police agencies and D.C. Fire and EMS responded to the shooting. The Metropolitan Police Department is leading the investigation.

The suspect's gun was recovered at the scene, sources said.

Park Police body camera video of the shooting will be released within 30 days.

The area is residential with several high rise buildings a few blocks away from the Washington Convention Center.
