Mother of Missing Infant Is Person of Interest, DC Mayor Says

Kyon Jones was last seen at noon Wednesday, police said.

NBC Universal, Inc. A mother is facing questioning by police about her missing baby, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said. News4’s Paul Wagner reports.

A two-month-old baby boy has been missing from Northeast D.C. since Wednesday, and his mother is a person of interest being questioned by police during the urgent search, the mayor said in an update Monday.

Kyon Jones was last seen at noon Wednesday in the 1500 block of Benning Road NE, police said. The infant was reported missing two days later, when police shared information with the public.

Police described Kyon as a Black infant with brown hair and brown eyes. What he was wearing was unknown. He is categorized as a critical missing person.

Law enforcement officials outside Richmond, Virginia, searched a landfill in the search for the infant. The Charles City County Sheriff’s Office is helping D.C. police search, the office said in a statement Monday. The child was not found.

News4’s Mark Segraves asked Mayor Muriel Bowser at a news conference Monday morning if the family was being monitored by the District’s child protective services agency.

“I’m not sure if this family was under any monitoring, but I don’t know,” Bowser replied. “They are early in the investigation, and the mother is being questioned about the child’s whereabouts.”

“Is the mother a suspect or in custody?” Segraves asked.

“The mother is the only person of interest,” the mayor replied, adding that she is not in custody.

A man who answered the door of the family’s apartment on Benning Road NE on Monday said he was a friend of Kyon’s mother. He said the infant’s mother told police that child protective services officials took the baby on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the agency said that’s not true and that they did not take the baby.

A source familiar with the investigation said the infant’s mother gave several leads to follow but they all came up empty.

Police have maintained a constant presence outside the family’s apartment complex since at least Friday. Residents said officers have gone door to door asking if they had seen children’s clothing.

“I was lost for words,” one resident said about officers’ questions.

Police said the child’s mother is cooperating but they still don’t know what happened to Baby Kyon.

Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts should call police at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
