2 Killed, 1 in Critical Condition After Fire in Emmitsburg

Two women were killed after their apartment building caught fire mid-morning Monday.

Fire and rescue units from the Emmitsburg Fire and Ambulance Companies were sent to 112 W. Main St. in Emmitsburg, Maryland, about 10 a.m. Dec. 7.

Three victims, including the two deceased women, were located and removed from the building by first responders, who then immediately administered emergency life-saving care.

Unfortunately, Geraldine Rachelle Jones, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, Donnie Jones, 69, was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma by Maryland State Police and remains in critical condition.

Diana Lyn Meyer, 43, passed away Tuesday at Lehigh Hospital in Philadelphia from injuries suffered in the fire.

All three victims were residents of the building, which contained two apartments. Geraldine and Donnie Jones lived together in one, and Meyer lived in the other.

The Frederick County Fire Investigation Task Force will continue to look into the cause and origin of the fire. The death investigation is ongoing and the body of Geraldine Jones has been taken to the Maryland State Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for an autopsy.

The fire required response from several units from surrounding counties, as well as Pennsylvania. Firefighters brought it under control within 35 minutes.

West Main Street in Emmitsburg (MD 140) has been reopened to normal traffic, after being shut down for several hours.
