18-Year-Old Killed in Burtonsville Days Before He Was Set to Start College

An 18-year-old shot and killed in Montgomery County was days away from going to college, his family says. News4’s Darcy Spencer reports.

An 18-year-old was shot and killed at his home in Montgomery County, Maryland, just days before he was set to start college.

Damion Callery Jr. was found dead about 3:43 a.m. Saturday in the 14100 block of Angelton Terrace in the Fairland area of Burtonsville, police said.

Callery encountered at least one armed person in his backyard when he was shot, police said. Officers found his body inside the home.

The teen recently graduated from Paint Branch High School and was preparing to start his freshman year at Bowie State University, his family said.

"He wanted to take up business and marketing, you know. He had plans of investing, buying stocks, working the stock market. He had a lot of hopes, aspirations and dreams," Callery's father, Damion Callery Sr., said.

He said his son was a talented rapper who recorded under the name Damo Dinero on YouTube and SoundCloud.

Dozens of family members and friends held a vigil Saturday night.

"We're just baffled right now this happened and, really, collectively as community we're standing here today to let everyone know that this violence must stop," Callery's uncle Devin Hawkins said.

The family wants anyone who has information to come forward to police.

"I want them off the streets. They deserve to be punished for what they did to my baby. He's my junior. I named him after me, and now he’s gone," Callery Sr. said.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police are asking that anyone with information call 240-773-5070 or Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 1-866-411-TIPS to be eligble for a $10,000 reward.
