16-Year-Old Boy Dies After Shooting in Southeast DC

A 16-year-old boy was critically injured in a shooting in Southeast D.C. Chris Gordon reports.

A 16-year-old boy who was shot several times in Southeast D.C. has died.

The teen, Steffen Brathwaite of Southeast D.C., was shot near 24th Place and Hartford Street SE, north of Suitland Parkway. D.C. police heard shots just after midnight Tuesday and rushed to the scene.

Brathwaite was found near a bench in the courtyard area of an apartment building.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but later died.

He was a student at Ballou High School, neighbors said.

Ward 7 neighborhood commissioner Tyrell Holcomb said teens in the area often tell him they fear for their lives.

"It's too much. My nephew, at 13 years old, can now count the number of people whose funerals he's been to, that he knows. At 13," he said.
