15-Year-Old Boy Shot at Rec Center in Northeast DC

NBC Universal, Inc.

A 15-year-old boy was shot outside a recreation center in Northeast D.C. Friday afternoon.

The boy ran inside Turkey Thicket Recreation Center at 1100 Michigan Avenue NE for help after he was shot in the neck about 4:20 p.m.

He was conscious and breathing when he was taken to a hospital.

"Itโ€™s a tragic incident we have to get to the bottom of," D.C. Council member Zachary Parker.

He said police told him it may have been a drive-by shooting.

"Neighbors are asking for greater surveillance in this area to make sure that there is greater enforcement after incidents like this," Parker said.

The rec center is across the street from where 13-year-old Karon Blake was shot and killed in January.

Neighbors said theyโ€™re tired of the recent violence.

"This has been a beautiful community, but now itโ€™s seeming to change," David Merriwether said.

"Around here, itโ€™s crazy, OK," said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. "Iโ€™m getting ready to move away from here. I canโ€™t take it."
