Cancer patients at Inova Fairfax Hospital will soon have access to state-of-the-art equipment, acupuncture, yoga classes and spa treatments — all under one roof.
About 80 patients and their caregivers got the first look Wednesday at the new Inova Schar Cancer Institute. It’s on a campus just across the street from the flagship hospital.
Among those patients was Jerry Hynes, a retired Capitol Police officer who found out his colon cancer had metasticized two years ago.
"Initially, I had been told eight to 12 months was my life expectancy," Hynes said.
After surgery and chemo, Hynes is now a year beyond that diagnosis.
"The prognosis was I’m going to have at least four to five more years, see my daughter graduate from college. So, I have to thank Schar Cancer Institute," Hynes said.
Hynes has had to go from office to office to see his different doctors, but soon he’ll have one stop — and his chemo treatment in a room with a view from the top floor.

"I understand the facility is supposed to have the latest equipment from across the country. I mean, that’s awesome," Hynes said.
"The surgeons will be here. The radiation oncologist will be here. The nutritionists will be here. The yoga instructors will be here. The acupuncturist will be here," Dr. Tim Cannon said.
It will also have some amenities patients won't find at a typical hospital. A spa at the institute allows patients and their caregivers to get manicures, pedicures and massages while at their appointments.
