Normally when you imagine a third birthday party, you might be thinking creepy clowns, Dora the Explorer napkins, crumbly cookies and a horde of little kids with that red popsicle dye all over their faces.
Not so at Urbana (2121 P St. N.W.), which will celebrate its third birthday Monday, July 20, kicking off a week of specials and freebies.
A Monday night party kicks off the festivities with sparkling wine specials and DJ-spun Top-40, electronica and house grooves.
Throughout the week (ending Sunday, July 26), soak up $3 happy hour specials from 4-7 p.m. -- plus a late-night repeat from 10-11 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Choose from Peroni, Estrella Galicia, Prosecco and house red and white wines. Coat your stomach first with $3 small plate specials. These offerings will change daily -- become a Facebook fan of Urbana to see the specials updated each day. We can tell you, though, that Monday's will be three bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with goat cheese. (Yes, please!) Mini pizzas will be going for -- guess what? -- $3.
You can also indulge (affordably!) in a three-course tasting menu for $30 (daily 5-7 p.m.), which features goodies from Chef Alex Bollinger’s new summer menu. Think yellow tomato gazpacho with fennel-encrusted croutons and bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin with polenta, melted Vidalia onions, and baby carrots. And don’t get us started on the chocolate peanut butter mousse hazelnut crunch, 'cause those are WAY too much delicious words all stuck together.
Dinner guests will be treated to a free glass of Prosecco (a dry, sparking Italian white wine) and -- this is our favorite part! -- everyone who becomes a Facebook fan during the week of July 20 will get a free cupcake if you show your fan confirmation on a mobile phone or printout. Listen, we'll do whatever it takes to get a free cupcake.
Sounds like a pretty decent birthday to us.
