Read All About It: Free Irish Book Day

4th Annual Irish Book Day:

There's no better day to get people to read contemporary Irish literature than on a day when everyone thinks they're Irish.

At least, that may have been part of the thinking when Solas Nua began their annual Irish Book Day four years ago. On St. Patrick's Day, the non-profit arts organization distributes thousands of copies of the best in contemporary Irish literature, with works from diverse and renowned writers. The event is made possible through the donations of major publishing houses, as well as through the sponsorship of Starbucks and Zipcar.

Solas Nua, whose name means "new light," is the only organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to contemporary Irish arts. They aim to promote awareness of modern Irish culture in D.C., through theatre productions, annual film festivals, and their book days.

Distribution begins at 6 a.m. until supplies run out. Book hand-out areas will be scattered around the city, so look near Metro entrances and places with lots of foot traffic.
