They spent 300 years giving back, now Catholic nuns are being recognized with a new exhibit.
The Smithsonian’s International Gallery debuted an exhibit detailing the impact that nuns have had on culture and social services in the United States.
The exhibit is called "Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America." It features stories dating back to the 1700s. In one section, visitors will find the story of 12 Catholic nuns who arrived in New Orleans in 1727, and received a letter from President Thomas Jefferson. That letter is now part of the display.
Another section is devoted to the role of sisters who spent time on the front lines during the Civil War.
