The big rumor today out of England is that the Abu Dhabi United Group which owns Manchester City wants to add a "superstar" to the mix at the Eastlands. And no, it's doubtful a copy of the Molly Shannon/Will Ferrell vechicle "Superstar" will suffice.
The usual names are being bandied about -- Kaká, Lionel Messi, Gianluigi Buffon, Fernando Torres, etc. Even in this wintry economic climate, money still seems to be no object. That's probably why this rumors can't be dismissed hat out of hand. Suppose City offers AC Milan $100 million for Kaka? The Italians would be crazy to leave that money on the table.
Lost in this is that City already have a pretty good attacking side with Robinho, Stephen Ireland and Shaun Wright-Phillips. All that oil money would probably be better spent by the club finding a bonafide holding midfielder type, because converted defender Vincent Kompany and aged German Dieter Hamann aren't getting the job done.
Whatever happens, expect these rumors to continue to float down the pipe until February 1.
