Some Welcome Pence to New Neighborhood With Gay-pride Flags

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Some of Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s new Washington neighbors are welcoming him to the area with gay-pride flags.

WJLA-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2fPicrT ) that several people on Pence’s new block have hung rainbow pride flags to show their displeasure about his positions on LGBT issues.

Pence is living in the neighborhood during the transition before he moves into the vice president’s mansion on the grounds of the Naval Observatory next year.

LGBT activists have criticized Pence for a “religious-objections” law he signed as Indiana governor that they said could sanction discrimination against gay people.

IIsle Heintzen is one of Pence’s new neighbors. Heintzen says the flag was designed to be a “respectful message” expressing her disagreement with Pence’s thinking.

A Pence spokesman did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Thursday.
