STAUNTON, Va. (AP) — The Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge is accepting donations to fund a scholarship in memory of Rita Wilson, Staunton’s first black councilwoman.
The News Virginian (http://bit.ly/2bSJTPo ) reports that the Rita S. Wilson Memorial Scholarship will be available to high school seniors and, like Wilson herself, working adults who want to pursue a college degree.
Wilson, who worked as a social worker for the state of Virginia for almost three decades, died in Richmond on April 18 at the age of 75.
Wilson was appointed to the City Council in 1991 and served as a councilwoman through June 2008.
Community Foundation CEO Dan Layman says the foundation will accept contributions to the scholarship fund at cfcbr.org through the end of 2016 and into early 2017.
