Apparent Human Remains Removed From Vietnam Memorial

Authorities said they removed what appears to be human remains scattered at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

A park volunteer noticed someone dumping material at the memorial about 11:30 a.m. Friday, according to U.S. Park Police.

A hazardous materials team responded and determined that the substance was not hazardous, D.C. Fire and EMS Department spokesman Pete Piringer said. Someone had apparently placed human remains at the site during a memorial service, Piringer said.

It's against federal regulations to dump ashes in parks, Park Police said.
